VERONA , N.J. ( AP ) -- Eric Mortenson, who spent 30 years as a recreation director and two decades as a free-lance sportswriter for The Associated Press, died Friday of cancer. He was 57.
Eric Mortenson helped start dozens of recreation programs in Verona , where he was hired as director in
1971. He retired in June, and a gym at a Verona community center was named in his honor.
In his time as a freelance writer for the AP, Mortenson often covered soccer, including the New YorkCosmos and the New York-New Jersey MetroStars.
