Stephen Alan Koehler, 76, of Bridgewater, NJ, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Stephen, known as Steve, was born March 22, 1943 in East Orange, NJ, the son of Janice M. (Colborn) and Millard H. Koehler.
Steve grew up in Newark and later Montclair, NJ and then lived in Budd Lake before settling in Bridgewater 42 years ago.
He graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Steve joined Prudential Insurance Company as a computer service clerk in 1963. He held various positions in the electronics services area and as a computer systems analyst before his promotion to manager. In 2000, he retired from Prudential Insurance Company as Vice President of Information Services. Steve’s hobbies included travel, hiking, square dancing, golf and photography. During his life, he traveled with family and friends throughout the United States and in several countries across six continents. His favorite trips included Russia, Peru, Australia, France, New Zealand and hiking trips to New Hampshire, Ireland and Switzerland.
In 2011, he was an active board member of Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County, receiving the Alma C. Liotta Award for Dedication to Literacy in 2019. He was a treasurer for the Tri-State Ramblers and led hikes for the group. Steve also volunteered for Leadership Somerset, United Way and the Bridgewater Economic Development Committee.
He and his wife were active members of the Northern New Jersey Square Dance Association for 30 years, achieving Advanced Level 2. He also participated in the Pulmonary Fibrosis Support Group 10 K walk and various fundraising events for local charities.
Steve met his wife, Peggy A. Koehler, when they both worked at a pet shop in Montclair. In 2015, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren in Turks and Caicos and last September they marked their 55th wedding anniversary.
Steve is predeceased by his parents and his sister, Karen Housel. He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy; two sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Peggy Koehler of North Brunswick, NJ and Jeff and Melinda Koehler of Emerson, GA; one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra K. and Joseph Lee; and five grandchildren: Ryan, Brianne, Brooke, Danica and Harrison.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2020 from 1-5pm at the Branchburg Funeral Home. 910 Route 202 South Branchburg, NJ 08876.
Committal is private.
